What the word actually means
Most outdoor lighting is trying to cover ground. Accent lighting asks which one thing should be looked at. It is not coverage. One feature, lit deliberately, with the surroundings left dark. The dark part is not a gap in the plan. It is what makes the lit part read.That is really the whole idea, and it is not complicated. Pick what matters and resist adding to it. Every plan gets pressure to grow, from the homeowner and sometimes from the company selling fixtures.
What tends to earn it
Not everything looks better lit. Anything with surface relief picks up light and shows it off, since the shadows a texture throws are the point. Flat painted siding mostly just gets brighter. Shape helps too: a strong silhouette, a distinct form.
How people get it wrong
Plans go wrong when the list grows. The homeowner likes the first uplit tree and asks for a second, then a third, then the corners of the house, then the shrubs. Once the whole yard is bright, the emphasis is gone, which means the money bought brightness rather than effect. A disciplined plan says no more than it says yes.A good accent plan seems minimal on a page and lands properly once the sun is down and you are looking at it.

Direction is a mood decision. Uplighting throws shadows upward, which nothing in nature does, so it reads as dramatic and slightly theatrical. Downlighting comes from above, the way light normally does, so nobody notices the technique.

Anything aimed at planting drifts out of alignment over the years. Growth closes over a fixture, and ground level fixtures get knocked out of position. It is not a fault, it is just how it works. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.Aim gets checked the same way the design was made: by walking out at night and seeing what the light is doing.
