The roof edge is the strongest line on the building
From the street, what you actually see at night is an outline, and the roof edge draws that outline. It is the longest continuous line on the building, and it has open sky behind it, which is why light on it reads from a distance. Put light on it and the house has an edge again, which is most of what people mean when they say a house looks good lit.Which is why almost every permanent lighting system starts at that line instead of being spread across the walls. The hardware, plainly
The system is a slim aluminum track, color matched to the trim, carrying LEDs along the roof edge. The channel does two jobs at once: it holds the lights and it hides them. Because it matches the trim, it disappears into the roof edge in daylight.
Where the run goes
The main roofline comes first, then the design decides what else is worth adding. After the main line come the gables, the dormers and the porch, each one judged on whether it helps. Outline everything and you end up with a shape and no depth, which is the usual mistake.Look along a completed run at eye level down the elevation, since a straight line over that span does not happen by accident.
Daylight is half the job
The hardware stays up, which makes daylight appearance part of what you are buying. Matching the channel to your trim color is not a cosmetic afterthought, it is what keeps the front of the home from looking decorated in summer. Mount it tight to the edge, match the color, and route the wire out of sight, and nothing about the daylight view changes.
How it gets used
Once the run is in, the rest is what you set it to. Warm white on an ordinary Tuesday. Red and green in December. A single color for Halloween. Team colors before a game. Most owners land on one white and leave it, and save the color for occasions.
What makes one roofline a bigger job than the house next door
Two houses on the same street can be very different jobs. Linear feet is the first one, but it is not the main one. Complexity is what drives it: straight runs are quick, and every corner, peak and level change adds work. Height is the other one, since upper runs need different access.
Where it fastens
Homeowners expect it to hang off the gutter, since that is how the temporary version goes up. The channel fastens to the roof edge itself, rather than to gutter that flexes and fills. That distinction matters because gutters move, sag and get replaced, and hardware attached to one goes wherever it goes.
