Two sides, two purposes
The front of a property is a view. The patio is for people sitting in it. That flips the priorities. Nobody is grading the back yard from the street. What matters is whether people stay out there past nine.The short version: do not treat the back as an afterthought of the front. The front and the back need different work, and assuming otherwise is how a patio ends up with one bright light on the wall. Two spaces, two separate sets of requirements to satisfy.
Glare ruins more patios than darkness does
A single glaring bulb undoes an otherwise good plan. A bare bulb at eye height makes everything behind it disappear, so the rest of the property vanishes. The fix is to put light low, high, or behind something: down at the deck, overhead well above the eye, or hidden behind furniture.
String lights are not a shortcut, they are a real technique
Strung lights above a patio create a ceiling where there was not one. A patio without them is a slab under an open sky. Add a canopy of light and the space closes in. Keep them soft, always.The good version is not the expensive version, it is the planned one, and the planning is the part that costs nothing.

The part that pays for itself
Without light, the space closes when the sun does. With light, the space is available whenever the weather is. In the Upstate there are plenty of mild nights well outside summer, and almost all of them are dark by six. The lighting is what converts them into usable time.
Insects
Outdoor light attracts things in the summer. Insects are drawn more strongly to the cool end, which is a second argument for keeping patio light warm. It helps. It is not a solution. But it is worth factoring in.If a permanent system runs along the roof over the back of the house, keep it warm and dim when people are out there, so nothing competes.
